Ferguson has admitted that he feels sorry for former Everton team-mate, Tony Grant, who missed out on a winners' medal in the 1995 FA Cup final. Grant played in the earlier rounds of the competition but was an unused substitute in the final against Manchester United, as the Toffees won 1-0.

Ferguson's regret highlights the often cruel nature of cup competitions. While the Scot enjoyed the celebrations that followed Everton's 1-0 victory, Grant was not given a medal, despite playing in their 4-1 semi-final win over Tottenham. Grant played for the Toffees between 1994 and 1999 and is now assistant head coach at Forest Green Rovers.

WHAT FERGUSON SAID

He told Stick to Football: "Tony never got on the bench. He never got his medal. I've always thought about him. He played against Tottenham and we battered them in the semi-final."
