According to the City’s interest in Wharton stems from their desire to bolster their midfield, as uncertainty looms over the future of Rodri. Since arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2019, Rodri has cemented his place in the heart of City's midfield, playing a pivotal role in their domestic and European successes. But recent reports suggest the Spaniard could be on the move next summer, with Real Madrid reportedly keen on securing his services. Should Rodri leave, it would leave a significant gap in City’s midfield, forcing Pep Guardiola to search for an adequate replacement.

However, City aren’t the only club interested in Wharton’s services as Liverpool are also tracking the Crystal Palace star. They had been linked with several midfielders in recent transfer windows, but their attempts to bring in reinforcements have not always been successful. Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad was the latest player on their radar but the Spanish midfielder opted to stay in La Liga. Hence Arne Slot has set his sights on Wharton who can add depth and quality to his midfield ranks.

DID YOU KNOW?

Wharton’s journey to becoming one of the most talked-about young midfielders in the Premier League has been impressive. He joined Crystal Palace from Blackburn Rovers during the winter transfer window earlier this year, in a deal reportedly worth £22 million ($29m) and has a contract with the Eagles until 2029. Hence any attempt to lure the player will require a significant financial outlay.

Since his arrival, Wharton has wasted no time in making his presence felt at Selhurst Park. His performances have drawn praise from both fans and pundits, with many hailing his vision, passing ability, and defensive work rate. These attributes earned him a call-up to England's Euro 2024 squad. He continues to evolve under Oliver Glasner and if he remains consistent, the Premier League giants could indeed come calling for the youngster next summer.
